You don’t have to go to a jungle. You don’t have to track down a Peruvian healer. All you need are tools for healing, so we created yoga and meditation classes designed to facilitate exactly that.
The name “the urban shaman” is rooted in the idea that we are bringing the fundamentals of the shamanic tradition to this container, where healing is accessible, and where classes will always feel inviting. It was also inspired by the personal journey of founder Ember Ashe, who sought to create a space where any individual, no matter their background or previous exposure to spiritual teachings, could connect with their inner teacher.
As a successful small business owner, Ember had all the things an entrepreneur “should” want: a booming flagship studio, and a brand new second studio in a prime location. But instead of feeling buoyant, she was met with incredible stress, and the creeping onset of depression. At the same time, she kept hearing the message: “you have to heal yourself before you can heal others.” So, following that guidance, she walked away from her business expansion, and devoted herself instead to self-illumination.
After years of this work, peeling off layers of old trauma with the help of powerful teachers and spiritual modalities, Ember landed on a few core principles. First, that communities built on love and acceptance foster healing, and second, that individuals who take responsibility for their own actions can undergo the healing. Out of these simple principles The Urban Shaman was born: we are a community built on compassion, creativity, groundedness, and most importantly – ease! Spirituality can feel a little “woo woo” to lots of people. (And we so get it.) So we bring a sense of lightness to our classes, where you don’t have to know any special lingo or brace yourself for anything unexpected. Just come with an open heart, and let our teachers and community take care of the rest.
In addition to movement and meditation, we do use different tools for sensory stimulation in class, including essential oils, aura clearing spray and healing crystals. Colored lights create a special visual effect, and vibrational tonal music plays to help set the mood for the room. Taking time to create one’s sacred space or “nest” is an important part of this practice, so we have the common yoga studio mats and props in addition to aerial silk support if your feeling adventurous!
